BernadetteBernadette: Princess Under Protest

by Cate McDermott

Sixteen-year-old Princess Bernadette is tired of all the restrictions of her royal life. All she wants to do is go horseback riding, dance at the annual Blossom Festival, and help the cottagers make jam! And above all, she definitely wants to avoid her upcoming arranged marriage to an unknown betrothed. So her father makes a bargain with her. Bernadette has one year to discover what she really wants out of life, and what she wants to be. If she decides against continuing to be a princess, her royal inheritance and betrothed will pass to her younger sister; otherwise, she will have to accept them both. Accompanied by her slightly authoritative cousin Pete and newfound friend Esmeralda, and with the annoying “Black Knight” Sir Colin and his gorgeous horse Midnight following her every step of the way along her journey, Bernadette sets off on a series of adventures that will guide her to her true destiny—in life and in romance. Her eventual decision may come as a surprise, even to herself!

When a new British friend, Jack Roddingham, arrives and reveals some information about the two shady characters, the girls are unexpectedly thrown into a mysterious adventure. But when a string of robberies occurs in the area, and the inept Saquacha police force seems unable to deal with the case, will the fledgling detective team of the Freestyle Five have to take action once again?

With the England trip looming, the girls are given an ultimatum by their parents: find the missing couple within a month, or give up the search. Can the girls beat all the odds and find the missionaries before time runs out?

Potato Pie and Cherry PicklePotato Pie and Cherry Pickle: Vintage Recipes from Pennsylvania’s Historic Bucks County

by Alexandra McDermott

The heritage recipe books of Bucks County are full of unusual and delectable recipes: lamb terrapin, breaded carrots, cocoa-molasses fudge, and lemon-apple pie. However, their outdated terminology and vague measurements can make recreating these dishes a challenge. In Potato Pie and Cherry Pickle, ninety of these recipes, carefully selected from old community cookbooks and recipe collections, have been updated and re-written for the use of the modern home cook. The area’s rich history and culture is also reflected in a series of “Bucks County spotlights” that feature sites of historical and culinary interest.

The book is divided into ten chapters, and every recipe is illustrated by a full-color photograph. The influence of the Pennsylvania German community is evident in a number of the recipes, including quaintly-named dishes such as Boova Shenkel, Tokey, and Boofers. English cuisine, brought over by the Quakers who originally founded the county, has also left its mark with Figgy Pudding, Graham Soda Bread, and Tomato Rarebit.

If you have an interest in food history, are intrigued by vintage recipes, or merely enjoy good food, this book is for you!
